If you have brachial plexus issues or not, there is a huge risk looming in the operating room: Peripheral nerve injury can occur from having your arms and neck positioned incorrectly when under anesthesia, and also from getting tests like a mammogram or any other procedure that involves specific positioning.
Affected and UN-affected arms must be protected and positioned carefully to avoid new injury and re-injury.
You must make it very clear to your physician and all involved in the procedure that you have brachial plexus issues and that you must personally, verbally approve the position you are in BEFORE getting sedated.
For parents whose children have a BPI – educate yourself about positioning. Here’s a chapter in a book from the School of Nurse Anesthesia. Be strong and courageous advocates for your children. Remember that you need to worry about the affected arm AND the UNaffected arm and neck.

For individuals with BPI, educate yourself and meet with your O.R. team in Pre-Op and assertively communicate your needs with a witness present. Tell them that you will work with them in the O.R. to create the best positioning and that you MUST give your verbal O.K. before going under anesthesia. And again, you are protecting both arms and your neck.
